medica mondiale congratulates Asma Jahangir on receiving the Right Livelihood Award 2014

Press release: Cologne, September 20, 2014. The women’s rights and aid organisation medica mondiale is delighted with the decision of the Right Livelihood Award Foundation this year to recognise the Pakistani lawyer Asma Jahangir and award her the Right Livelihood Award. Granting this prize to Asma Jahangir honours one of Pakistan’s leading human rights defenders, who is particularly committed to defending the rights of women.

“Congratulations to Asma Jahangir! I am overjoyed with the jury’s decision, once again paying tribute to the struggle for women’s rights by giving Asma Jahangir the Right Livelihood Award,” says Monika Hauser, Executive Member of the Board at medica mondiale. The jury announced their reason for this decision as follows: “…for defending, protecting and promoting human rights in Pakistan and more widely, often in very difficult and complex situations and at great personal risk.”

Appreciation for Pakistani human rights activist

For many decades now, the 62-year-old human rights activist has been committed to ensuring protection and justice for women, children and religious minorities in Pakistan. Even as a young woman, she dedicated herself to an unflinching struggle against the oppression of women. Together with other women’s rights campaigners, she opposed laws in Pakistan which discriminated against women. In response, she received threats, was attacked in public and put under house arrest. As well as her work for human rights in Pakistan, Ms Jahangir also worked for the United Nations, including the UN Human Rights Council.

“I am sure that receiving this award will strengthen Asma Jahangir in her activism to support human rights and I also wish her continued strength for her courageous work,” said Ms Hauser. In 2012, Monika Hauser and Asma Jahangir were jointly awarded the North-South Prize of the Council of Europe and now they are also both united in their efforts for women’s rights as Right Livelihood Award Laureates.

About the Right Livelihood Award

This year, two further human rights activists were granted the Right Livelihood Award: Basil Fernando and Bill McKibben. Furthermore, Edward Snowden and Alan Rusbridger jointly received the 2014 Right Livelihood Honorary Award. The Right Livelihood Award was established in 1980 to honour and support individuals and initiatives “offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent challenges facing humanity today”.
