Evaluation: International Peacebuilding project (2009-2011) shows effects on political participation

In March 2006 medica mondiale started a 3 year project to encourage and support the political participation of women and girls in the peace process in Liberia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Afghanistan. Three years later, at the end of 2011, the independent expert Michaela Raab conducted a final evaluation of the project on behalf of medica mondiale. The results highlighted considerable differences in the three countries. In the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Afghanistan political participation was obviously strengthened. Success in Liberia was achieved in the first attempts to sensitise women to the possibilities and means of becoming active in and for women’s rights.

Networking and lobbying were very successful in the DR Congo. An experienced international campaigner for women’s rights coordinated the work of 15 committed activists who had previously worked together in a political action group. Michaela Raab was very enthusiastic and reported:

"The women’s group in the Democratic Republic of Congo was truly a very impressive example. The group members have been actively involved in working for the rights of women, in some cases, for decades. The project was a wonderful opportunity for them to work together again. Distances are so great, that without external support, they would be unable to get together to plan and carry out their campaigns".

A particularly important result for the group was that thanks to their efforts, a number of military officers were convicted for acts of sexualised violence.

Existing networks in Afghanistan received further support, while in south east Liberia, the group members founded a peace network called Sinoe Women Peace Network (SWNP) and organized their first joint campaign. "It was a completely new experience for people here in Sinoe to see that the regional leader now listens to us when we talk to him about our concerns. That was an "Aha" moment for me and the community", said a woman from the SWPN network.

Here you will find a summary of the most important evaluation results.
