Advocacy activities

The advocacy activities take place both within the countries and outside. They are the same within each of the three countries but will be adopted to the country-specific background and to the topics, which are most urgent to the women in Afghanistan, Liberia and Congo.

Within the countries, the organisation of and the participation in the 16-Days-Campaigns will be most prominent within the advocacy activities. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign within which participants all over the world demonstrate against violence against women since 1991. By choosing the dates, November 25, International Day Against Violence Against Women and December 10, International Human Rights Day, participants link violence against women and human rights in order to emphasize that such violence against women is a violation of human rights.

The project envisages the women to develop a concept and organise two 16-Days-Campaign in 2010 and 2011. The results of the campaigns will be accomplished in a documentation after the campaign in 2011 has taken place.

Besides the campaigns, the women will organise several round tables and hearings with politicians on the topic of sgbv and UNSC Res. 1325 and 1820. The topics will also be used for articles which will be published within the countries and on medica mondiale’s and ISIS’ homepages. For getting the most possible attention T-Shirts, radio spots and TV spots will be broadcasted to raise awareness on the issue of women’s rights and violence against women.

On international level, the women will be part of an advocacy trip to Brussels and Berlin in 2011. The trip shall strengthen the visibility of the Afghan, Liberian, and Congolese women in EU and German institutions and policies.

In both countries the women will have the possibility to discuss with politicians and staff of the security policy sector on the situation of women in their countries. The activities shall also increase knowledge of European politicians concerning the security situations in the three countries and shall contribute to the establishment of an early-warning-system.

Besides this, the women shall gain contact to key persons within EU and German politics.
