Afghan Women’s Movement organises First Women’s Council to Kabul Conference ...
On July 17 and 18, 2010, delegates of the Afghan Women's Network in coordination with Ministry of Women's Affairs and Equality for Peace and Democracy organized a two days conference in Kabul named “Afghan Women's Movement from First Women Council to the Kabul conference”. The purpose of this conference was to bring a joint and collective voice of Afghan women that were excluded from the grand Kabul Conference which took place on July 20, 2010. More than 300 women from different provinces, had come together to solidify their voices at the capital of the country. They called on the Afghan government and international interlocutors to address women’s needs and concerns according to the priorities that were set by Afghanistan National Development Strategy (ANDS), Afghan Constitution (2004), National Action Plan for Women (NAPWA) at the center of the Kabul conference.
Afghan women vow not to accept a peace that harms their achievements
Women from ten organisations, in a meeting of the Peace Building Network (PBN) called by medica mondiale Afghanistan and Afghan Women’s Network (AWN) on Thursday 10 th June, proclaimed their support of the active participation of women in the Peace Jirga and declared with one voice that Afghan women won’t agree to lose their achievements in a peace deal. They praised the active participation of women in the Jirga, and they stipulated that Afghan women will not accept a peace negotiation which causes any harm to or loss of the achievements they have gained over the last ten years.

On June 2, 2010, the Congolese Human Rights Activist Floribert Chebeya Bahizire was found dead in a car in the capital Kinshasa with his hands tied. In the past the director of the Organization La Voix des Sans-Voix (Voice of those without voice) had worked several times with Immaculée Birhaheka, who is at the helm of PAIF, which is the Congolese partner organisation of medica mondiale. „I am shocked at Chebeya’s murder and do hope that an independent investigation will determine the perpetrators“, Birhaheka said.
Photo exhibition: Women in the Democratic Republic of Congo
In March, from 1st to 5th, the photo exibition "Rape as a weapon of war: Women in the Democratic Republic of Congo“ will be exposed in the European Parliament in Brussel. The exhibition shows a photo documentary by the photojournalist Cornelia Suhan who visited the Congolese women's rights organization PAIF in Goma/Eastern Congo in September 2008. medica mondiale has been cooperating with PAIF since 2004. PAIF is one of the few organisations that care for raped women and girls in the Kivu Provinces. The photo exhibition will be held on Barbara Lochbihler´s initiative.
The Afghanistan Election: An interview with a local team member
Elections will be held in Afghanistan on August 20 to choose provincial council members and a national president. For various reasons, many Afghans take little interest in the elections. Many are burdened with problems of their own. Many women who can’t even choose their own husbands can’t grasp the concept of choosing a president. And many believe that the United States has already fixed the presidential election in favor of the incumbent Hamid Karzai. They see the election as an exercise in futility. Open letter to Merkel and Steinmeier - Womens’ rights into focus!
Against the background of worldwide protests against the signing of the Schiite Family and Personal Status law which debases women, medica mondiale demands that the German government gives womens’ rights a central role in their Afghanistan strategy. In an open letter to the Federal Chancellor Merkel and Foreign Minister Steinmeier medica mondiale insists on decisive intervention on the part of German politics, in order to prevent the passing of the Law in its current form.
Congolese human rights activist receives the Bremen Solidarity Prize
On March 16, 2009, Immaculée Birhaheka, founder of the Congolese women’s rights organization PAIF (Promotion et Appui aux Initiatives Féminines), was awarded the 11th Bremen Solidarity Prize. As the Senate of Bremen explained: With this award, "we are honoring one of the leading human rights defenders of the Democratic Republic of Congo, for her tireless efforts on behalf of women’s rights."
Monika Hauser awarded the Alternative Nobel Prize

Training Manual: Taking action against violence in Afghanistan
Gurcharan Virdee, a medica mondiale employee, summarized her experiences from five years of work in Afghanistan in an up-to-date training manual. The manual includes training modules for activists as well as for employees from organizations and institutions. The topics covered include: women-oriented counseling, family mediation and cooperation.

“Historic”, “long overdue”, “an important step forwards”, this is how United Nations Resolution 1820 of June 19 was received by many. And indeed, for the first time ever the use of sexualized violence is officially designated as a war tactic – a tactic used to degrade and humiliate people, dominate them, instill fear in them, force them to relocate. Also for the first time, it affirms that sexualized violence is a potential threat to world peace and international security.
