20 training courses for 526 women

Project support in the Cape Town region, South Africa

Every 23 seconds in South Africa a woman is raped. Every six hours a woman is killed. The women’s organisation Engender aims to strengthen the position of women and to encourage them to step out of the victim role.

In the spring of 2006, medica mondiale supported ->> Engender in conducting 20 training courses in the Cape Town region, in which 526 women participated. These participants are the first point of contact for women seeking advice. Engender is one of the few organisations that examines the link between the ongoing violence against women and the effects of systemic violence perpetrated by the apartheid regime in the past.
