NAWA woman center in Sulemaniah
Project funding in Sulimaniah/ Northern Iraq

The scope of the ways of life of women in Iraq is still really narrow, conditions of their real life are shocking. Violence against Iraqi women and the violation of her human rights is ruling their every day life: Curtailments, gender based violence and tortures are far common. Since 2003, the woman center "NAWA center for Women in Distress" founded by the organization WADI (registered association) in north Iraq is supported by the medica mondiale project fund. The funding is used to finance e.g. the salaries of the female staff: the coordinator, the social worker and the night nurse.
18 women and their children in acute difficult situations get at the same time protection and accommodation, medical and psychological supply in the NAWA center. The project also offers further professional education and legal support for those women. As soon as centers like NAWA have got known, many women are finding these shelters because the need for shelter for women in Iraq is large.
